You actually can claim the loss but you will need to do one of the following;
a) Sell the shares to someone privately at 2c or less
b) If you have a family trust you can gift the shares to the trust.

Both of these create a taxable event and you will need to contact Advanced Share Registry in WA to finalize the transfer. You will need to complete one form and submit a copy signed by both parties (off market transfer form).
