Mindax has called on Yilgarn iron ore hopefuls to band together and co-ordinate an infrastructure strategy for the underdeveloped region.

The Perth junior, pushing for the establishment of a Yilgarn Iron Producers Association to mirror lobby groups in the Mid-West and the Pilbara, also plans to meet Premier Colin Barnett, Mines Minister Norman Moore and Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls to discuss infrastructure needs in the region.

Largely ignored in favour of the Pilbara and the Mid-West, the Yilgarn has infrastructure including railways to ports at Esperance and Kwinana.

Mindax is assessing its infrastructure needs to connect the Mt Forrest asset, which the junior estimates could contain a 2.8 billion tonne magnetite resource.

Options include a 135km rail spur to Leonora or 160km to Menzies to hook into the railway to Esperance or Kwinana.

Likely foundation members of YIPA are Cliffs, Jupiter Mines, Mineral Resources, Cashmere Iron, Legacy Iron Ore, Hawthorn Resources and Macarthur Minerals.
