Yes, melodies are not just defined by different notes - the spaces are the key - Miles D, Debussy or SM, it does not matter.
Try this! Play the C scale from middle C - up and back and keeping the space constant. Just an exercise scale, that's all it is, no real melody. Then try it downwards with spacing so as to fit "Joy to the World ...'
