Chip-makers don't have decades for R&D, they need improved performance right now as IoT and cloud computing is bursting at the seams
If every device ran on a chip made from something other than silicon, that resource would deplete too quickly; there are just too many new chips made/needed every year -hence chip-makers are / will be reticent to go to anything else.
