I do not agree.
If company A has $100 and a 50% shareholding in company B. (for ease lets say 100 shares for both companies at $1 each). Then company A has on its balance sheet cash of $100 and an asset (50% stake in company B) of $50. Company A's value is $150. It is immaterial if Company B has purchased a stake in Company A. Company A can sell their 50% stake to Company X for $50 (if that is what the market think a 50% stake in company B is worth) and Company A will now have $150 in cash. Conversely Company A will be worth $150.
