In Sunday’s other hotly contested countdown, more than 30,000 brew lovers around Australia knocked the froth off WA beers.
Gold Coast brewer Balter took out top spot on the 11th annual GABS Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers for the second consecutive year with its XPA.
Meanwhile, only nine beers from this State made the list, down from 16 the previous year.
Our top brew came from Palmyra-based brewery Gage Roads’ Single Fin, which came 10th and was the only WA beer in the top 50.
Local breweries which made the bottom half of the Hottest 100 included Feral (Hop Hog at 53 and Biggie Juice at 100), Colonial (Pale Ale at 62 and South West Sour at 96), Little Creatures’ Pale Ale at 62 and Nail VPA at 72.
Gage Roads had three entries on the beer parade — their American pale ales Little Dove and Atomic placed 57th and 66th, respectively.
The annual poll revealed craft drinkers have reacted negatively to Coca-Cola Amatil’s purchase of Feral two years ago.
The brewer, which is based in Bassendean with a brew pub in the Swan Valley, have gone from Feral Hop Hog, scoring a trifecta of wins from 2012-14 to only landing two beers in the lower half of the list.
About 31,000 drinkers voted 15,500 times, with Balter earning the most overall votes ahead of Canberra brewer BentSpoke, Byron Bay’s Stone & Wood and Sydney’s Young Henrys.
Balter and ACT brewery Capital both boast six beers on the Hottest 100, while BentSpoke and Young Henrys scored five each.”
