Rex never does, and is currently the only Regular Public Transport airline operating in Australia that makes a profit. Albeit declining. So when they speak, we should take note.
Unlike Qantas, Rex will not operate on routes it thinks are not viable. Qantas has recently applied for the Moree licence. Rex thinks it is very marginal, and did not apply for a licence for that route.
Similarly it has decided not to apply for the Cobar and Mudgee routes following the collapse of Brindabella. So the mining town of Cobar is sans any air service, and the miners and everyone else have to drive for three hours to Dubbo to catch a plane. Dubbo has up to 11 Sydney flights a day.
As a close follower of the airline business, I don't think the public and Councils of many towns realise just how close they are to being unserviced. A frequent and efficient air service is vital for the survival of many towns. Base hospitals in Wagga, Dubbo, and Tamworth rely on many visiting specialists and day surgeons. A break down in air service is much more than just an inconvenience. It ultimately puts the cost of business up for the whole country.
I think the coming drama for Qantas will be a wake-up call for those who are asleep at the wheel. The labor government absolutely decimated regional air services with colossal cost impositions. Crunch time is coming.
