jnash i'd say its obvious from your post that you have little knowledge about ophthalmology or about the financial situation of your typical private patient
a majority of patients seen in eye clinics do not have severe visual loss and the majority of patients having cataract surgery are at no short or even mediaum term risk of blindness. My dad recently had cataract surgery privately - he could see perfectly well except for having a bit of increasing difficulty following the golf ball off a drive (that was his only complaint, he could read small print in a newspaper and drive perfectly well)- he was diagnosed with early cataracts and offered an op - he chose to have the op but would really not have been fussed too much if he had too wait 6-12 months at the local public hospital instead or he could happily have deferred the surgery indefinitely
sure there are a proportion of wealthy people attending private clinics but the majority are just everyday people on average or slightly above average earnings - $300 will not make a difference to a proportion of patients but it will make a difference to a significant proportion of other patients who will be put off by a significant price hike
