Connecting Australian Battery Technology to Kansai, Japan - the centre of world battery production

Japan produces almost half of the world's lithium ion batteries and the 'Kansai' region centred on the City of Osaka is where 80% of all Japan's lithium ion batteries are produced.

Japanese industry is aware of abundance of material resources with which Australia is blessed, including 50% of the world's known lithium reserves. So when Austrade and CSIRO wanted introduce Australia's other 'hidden resource' - Australian technology - to the world-leading Japanese battery industry, Osaka was the logical host.

On 5 December 2018, Austrade partnered with the CSIRO to bring 14 research organisations and companies to showcase a variety of Australian technologies covering all aspects of production, implementation and recycling of new-generation batteries and energy storage devices.

Historically Australia has been Japan's most important energy partner. Japanese investment in Australia has built Australia's coal and LNG export markets. Australia and Japan are also experimenting with the development of the hydrogen sector and now Austrade and CSIRO are striving to ensure that Japan and Australia are integrated in the development of next-generation battery and energy storage devices.

Nice little comment from Manuel Wieser
“Also from us, a big thanks to the organisers for all the effort that went into pulling together this impressive line-up of Australian and Japanese industry/R&D representatives.”

    Hmmmmm
