Freeport-McMoRan has been down the road at Grasberg for decades. So it is possible for foreign companies to make a fortune in West Papua province mining gold and copper. But I do take your point on the corruption and violence which we still need to find a solution to. I do remember one owner of Freeport taking Indonesian citizenship years ago and the more recent bribing of politicians is well known. Both strategies seem to have allowed Freeport to continue operating. Not advocating this as a solution for WWI bur it does illustrate the lengths some go to in order to do work in Indonesia.
