2. Triffids -- classic novel - "The Day of the Triffids" by John Wyndham.
An 8 foot high vegetable, with legs and great stinging stamen - they 'hide' in the shrubberies, then lash out with their deadly stinging stamen, blind people and then gobble them up.
Triffids were bioengineered & housed in massive nurseries after Earth realised that they were running out of oil.
The idea was to squash em up and get fuel products - they had other ideas.
