I'm just going to leave this article here - its detailed enough for most to appreciate the issues involved but written clearly enough so that a layman has a chance of following it- if anyone is interested in the science of resource estimation this is one of the better published papers out there - if you can't understand this paper then you are gambling...

If nothing else look at Table 4 on page 84 to see how errors in grade estimation can potentially make even high grade deposits uneconomic - especially when combined with lengthy transportation logistics.
