Main three minerals in nickel systems are pyrrhotite (iron sulphide) chalcopyrite (copper sulphide) and pentlandite (nickel sulphide). Get enough of it and it's a conductor.
I'd say they're just covering bases and assaying the shear for potential for gold. That assemblage of minerals and description of the shear and veining sounds like it's worth a shot. Just opportunistic sampling on the way down to the real target. I'd doubt this shear is anything to do with the the conductor. Just an unfortunate spanner thrown in the works of the drilling trying to get to target, but maybe a cloud with a gold lining ).
