My understanding is that high grade nickel for EV batteries comes from nickel sulphides to produce nickel sulphate for electroplating and lithium-ion cathode material. Less than 10% of nickel supply is in sulphate form, and not all of that is battery grade.
The nickel laterites found on Isabel are low grade in comparuson to sulphite deposits and usef mainly for pig iron and ferronickel as inputs to make stainless steel.
