So ran my mistaken thoughts after Kelaher's appearance at the Royal Commission. Whatever the opinions people had about CK's deportment on the witness stand, it seemed that there were (relatively) objective facts in this matter - facts that hadn't changed, and of which APRA had known for years and chosen to do nothing.
I suppose there are three possible outcomes:
1. APRA have over-reached and the company, its directors and management can pull through this relatively unscathed. ANZ Wealth acquisition goes ahead.
2. Directors and management lose jobs, IFL cops some sort of operating restrictions and a fine - but with the company's business model intact.
3. IFL broken into component parts, with those spun-off as independent entities or acquired by others.
Assuming APRA have their act together this time, valuation would have to turn on scenarios 2 and 3. There's tremendous value in the company at $4.60 if it remains relatively whole; the tricky part is what's it worth in a forced demerger?
