I'm not a petroleum geologist or engineer but the guy in the video presumably has some credibility as he is talking in front of the Houston Geological Society. At 21minutes 19 seconds into his talk he puts up a slide with a small diagram in the bottom right hand corner where he divides US gas production into conventional and unconventional (see slide below) and his words are
"the grey tower on the left is conventional gas production in the US and all the little pimples down below are shale gas production"
Now you're not going to get an argument out of me but it would seem that no one at his talk pulled him up on the commonly agreed to meaning of the terms conventional and unconventional.
I think he was using the words unconventional and shale interchangeably through out his talk and in my experience this is common terminology.
