If his background is chemistry, you can be sure he is not aware of any recent (read "20 years") developments and experiments regarding gold. Chemistry is one of the reasons why I am here, beside geology. And, if he is aware of those developments, he eventually choses to ignore it in the same way the luddites decided to destroy machinery: it destroys his believings and his interests.
