last comment on the issue - it occurred to me on looking at the pan photo of gold - i think that when some one says coarse gold - all throw up their collective hands as if that explains all the problems - in reality the pan of gold shows yes it is not fine gold but it also shows there are numerous coarser grains in the pan which should distribute throughout a sampling process without too much of a problem - if it were 2 coarser nuggets in the pan then i would say yes that is a real coarse gold problem - it is clear to me that it is likely that the problem was mostly at the hammer face and smearing, plus some minor splitting variations.
