I'm also from the age of steam and took the train to school each day. One morning the brothers Gunn, who boarded the train at the station after mine, got up early, took a can of grease from the shed, walked down to the railway behind their house and liberally greased the lines all the way up an incline probably eighty metres in all. So when the train left the station, with the brothers Gunn on board, heading for the incline nobody could figure why the brothers were quietly crapping themselves with ill disguised mirth. The locomotive slowed with wheels spinning and a lot of loud chuffing, it was obvious it wasn't going to make it so all us school kids piled off clearly headed for a day off. The next day we made it to school and at lunch the brothers told us what they'd been up to, they said it was the first and last time they did this as they saw the chaos they caused throughout the day. Whenever I'm on that line today I have a quiet chuckle to myself as the train passes behind the Gunn's house and smoothly runs up the incline.
