Green technology improves equipment and air quality

    06 Jan 2015
    SmartEnergy
If Australian buildings underwent a simple retrofit to current air conditioning and refrigeration plants, half of the country's emissions reduction target could be met, according to Aeris Environmental CEO, Peter Bush.
The retrofit involves using the company's coatings and optimisation technology, AerisGuard SmartEnergy, which extends the life of equipment by as much as 10 years while delivering dramatic improvements in indoor air quality.
Bush said the work involved treating the existing spectrum of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment with the Australian company's patented SmartEnergy solution.
He said air conditioning and refrigeration has been identified as offering the greatest single opportunity to immediately achieve a reduction in carbon emissions targeted by the federal government.
"The Aeris solution has immediate cost savings and typically a payback period of less than two years," Bush said.
"Air conditioners and refrigeration systems represent 22 per cent of all Australia's electricity production usage. This represents 42.46MT or 10 per cent of total emissions.
"In any given building HVAC represents on average 52 per cent of the total energy consumed by that building.
"Using data from the Cold Hard Facts Report, broad implementation of SmartEnergy presents an opportunity to achieve up to half of the total emissions target prior to 2020."
Bush said buildings incorporating the Aeris integrated SmartEnergy solutions are achieving on average 25 per cent reduction in RAC energy usage, with improved air flow, air quality and a significant impact on peak demand usage.
He said considerable financial savings and air quality outcomes are also available to SMEs and householders, with the added benefit of healthier air.
"The SmartEnergy system provides ongoing data, reporting and monitoring to track the savings. Plus, it can improve energy ratings," Bush added.
For every new 2kW (electrical input) of air conditioning capacity added to the electrical distribution networks, some $7,000 in costs for network augmention are imposed on the system, according to the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism.
Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Equipment Manufacturers Association (AREMA) policy advisor, Greg Picker, said performance relates directly to air flow capability and maintenance.
He said energy efficiency is the one sensible climate change policy that everyone can agree on.
