Sebastian Hernandez
Sebastián Hernández is a Ph.D. student of the College of Engineering, Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Kentucky under the aegis of Dr. Dibakar Bhattacharyya’s (Dr. DB) lab. His research is supported by NIH – NIEHS – SRC program.
Sebastián is from Medellín, one of the principal cities in Colombia, South America. Prior to starting his current program, he was a faculty member of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá D.C., Colombia. While in los Andes, he mentored 17 BS projects related to wastewater and water treatment. He has a MS in Civil Engineering from los Andes that worked in the environmental field of photo-catalytic and catalytic processes in industrial wastewater. In his MS and lecturer research, he used titanium dioxide and iron particles in photo-catalytic and catalytic processes such as photo-Fenton to degrade pollutants like textile dyes from industrial wastewater. His BS is in Chemical Engineering from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, also in Bogotá D.C., Colombia.
While mentoring Joe Papp, Alani Johnson, Cassandra Porter and incoming Fox Thorpe he continues his current research activities in Dr. DB’s membrane lab relating to the development of different nano-structured materials and their applications in water detoxification. He has participated in more than 10 conferences in USA, Colombia and Italy. For his work he has received: (1) Meritorious Mention award in the BS graduation project titled “Design and Construction of an Equipment to Determine Liquid-Vapor Equilibrium Conditions with Pressures Up to 5 bar”, and in 2015 he received research poster awards at the (2) ECI Advanced Membrane Technology VI: Water, Energy and at the (3) New Frontiers in Syracuse, Italy and again at the (4) RE3 workshop in Louisville, KY. Sebastian also received a mention-for-the-best-presentation-of-his-session in the Separations Division at the AIChE annual meeting in 2014 in Atlanta, GA.
