The idea here I believe is to provide Solar Panels to charge UPS Batteries. When Turbo/Diesel/Gas Generators go down the UPS system is relied on to maintain Power to Platform Life Support Systems. Eg Fire and Gas, Telecommunications, Emergency Lighting etcetera.
Once these UPS Batteries deplete then Generator power is needed to recharge. What I’m understanding here now is CCE are looking to provide SP power to keep UPS System Batteries charged without he need for, as quoted, Cold Start scenarios. This would mean increased safety in an emergency situation considering UPS last longer without the need for Generated Power to recharge.
I’m thinking now this is a very important concept as we all know safety is highest priority and if Solar Panels can increase Safety then Companies will jump all over it.
So where as earlier today I was trying to comprehend load based SP Offshore application I’m now thinking the above.
I’m no expert and certainly not suggesting my comments represent this accurately however to my mind now it makes sense.
I would love to hear some comments to agree.....or not
PS.. I have personally experienced the following in Arctic conditions.. something the Client said would never happen happened.. in 2009
Offshore Platform fed by 6KV from Onshore, Main TurboGenerators failed onshore, this started Backup or Standby 6KV Generator Onshore, this also failed in start up, Offshore Emergency Generator started and ran for 15 minutes after which it failed. This left Platform relying on UPS supplying Life Support Systems. Platform sat for 5 hours like this as Auto Load Shedding systematically shutdown systems as Batteries depleted. We were preparing for a Pappa alarm, abandon Platform when Onshore managed to get Main Power back on. We had in the course of 5 hours virtually frozen!
I can certainly see how Solar Panels during the day could have aided this situation.
