They will be buying power overnight (not during the day) at the lowest prices and selling into the peaks during the day. I believe they are targeting both the short morning peak as well as the longer evening peak for the hydro delivery. I do not believe there are any plans to use the solar to top up the hydro and I also do not believe the demand curve requires this.
The duck curve is derived from transformer feeders, typically in areas where there is a penetration of solar into the system. The AEMO dashboard for statewide demand does not follow this same pattern (not exactly anyway). Having said that, the peak still typically occurs between 3pm and 8pm as peeps get home from work and the sun starts it's inevitable daily decline.
It is this afternoon/evening peak that the hydro will target, however, Genex is only a small project relative to the required storage to cut off this peak.
