It could be GDXJ selling out because MML no longer meets its investing criteria due to low market cap or some other metric. They last lodged a sell notice on 24 August. If that is the case then shorter could be active to push the share price even lower knowing that GDXJ is in selldown mode.
On the other hand there could be some bad news we have not been told.
I am just guessing.
Anyway - I am in for a trade only. I have lowish expectations of the company but do not expect it to go under in the near term at the current USD POG. I am not endorsing MML as an investment.
