Good arguments, and definitely a problem for shares if some development news doesn't trickle out from TXN HQ. I agree that TXN should announce that there is interest/bids and that discussions are ongoing with one or more potential buyers. That would not undermine negotiations. I think details beyond that can be an issue, however.
There is, of course, the risk of no bidders, but other than the oil price drop and current market scare (which occurred after the bidding deadline), I think the odds are high that companies are interested. Others have posted recent EF and nearby sales, with premium prices paid.
No idea what legal restrictions exist. I know of farm-in agreements where the major oil firm wanted its name hidden until all the the agreement was absolutely finished, but that is not a legal issue, either.
