I don't necessarily disagree on communicating the timeline, they could have left it out even.
The reality is people want some idea, so they would have mutually come up with that estimate based on what they knew at the time. For infinite reasons that time ran out and they reset expectation by announcing to the market. It's just normal course of business when their key aim is getting things right.
IMO the concerns raised here have been shortsighted and unwarranted. Had the timeline lapsed without any update then arguably people might be justified in getting snarky about it.
