slag is what is left over after smelting.It usually has to be chipped away after the contents of the crucible once cooled from the furnace are emptied.

The fact that gold can be recovered from the slag is another atypical feature of the ore.......possibly because it is so rich and the other elements such as palladium etc really play havoc with the standard redox reactions that occur with the smelting process.

One of the aims of the team will be to try to find the right flux so as to avoid this.

I would like to hear from an authoratative metallurgist.Is there anyone out there?
