The initial recovery rate described here is just the percentage of gold recovered from the first smelt over the total recovered from the first and second smelts.
Until we have an assay technique that can tell us exactly how much gold is in the rock before we subject the ore to an extraction process there's no way to know what the metallurgical recovery rate is.
