Base metal prices rose strongly overnight on the back of China's producer price index (PPI) hitting a five-year high.
Lead was up 3.8 per cent to $US2,172 a tonne, copper put on 2.8 per cent to $US5,736/t, zinc was up 2 per cent to $US2,700/t and nickel also put on 2 per cent to $US10,815/t.
Head commodities analyst with ANZ Research, Daniel Hynes, said there were a number of factors behind the price rises, including a lack of investment in the sector in the last five years while the focus was on bulk commodities like coal and iron ore.
