Although a lot of bad decisions were made, and I still think most of the latter legal action was completely unwarranted (although the earlier stuff against Buru and the TOs worked) Kim and Neil did bring OBL into the world and it must feel pretty bad to have not accomplished what they wanted with their baby over the last decade (although yes, they got paid over the last half of it). It's not like they're going anywhere, they're kind of just heading things off at the pass by resigning as executives, but it would hurt a little to resign as CEO etc and watch REY pick up any glory by simply being in charge when/if Buru get the Laurel happening (although yes they probably could have locked FMG down back in the day and not had to rely on this too).
No one is going to feel sorry for them given the current state of things and that's certainly justified if you've lost 90%+ of your investment but it's not the easiest thing in the world to run a junior explorer.
