With pre and post market trading there are often announcements made during trading hours. It's just more common that they do it out of hours.
Hell WFM shares were temporarily suspended when the Amazon announcement was made. Amazon shares were open for trading the entire time, prior to the announcement they were down about 1.6% in pre market trading and then as the announcement was made you'd watch the price climb.
