U.S. House and Senate Could Agree On 2018 Farm Bill Today

The United States House and Senate could possibly agree on the 2018 Farm Bill as early as today. The 2018 Farm Bill will have broad-reaching implications for hemp extract consumers, including formally separating hemp from cannabis and removing hemp extracts from the Controlled Substances Act.

Attorney Daniel Cameron of Frost Brown Todd, DC lobbyist for the U.S. Hemp Roundtable, reported the news last week.

“Everyone appears to want to pass the bill before going home for the Holidays and the conclusion of the 115th Congress, and for good reason,” Cameron’s report stated.

“Keep in mind that next year the makeup of the House membership will be different […]. This could complicate the farm bill process if it is not finalized this year.”

With 12 days left before Congress members head home for the holidays, the pressure is on to pass the bill before year’s end.

What happens next?
If the House and Senate agree on the 900+ page 2018 Farm Bill, which includes numerous provisions relating to agriculture, today, the bill will continue through the legislative process and onto the President’s desk before it’s passed. The U.S. Hemp Roundtable provided a full breakdown of the steps on their blog post today to clarify what the near future likely holds for hemp.

1. After the House and Senate agree on the final Farm Bill, the House/Senate Conference Committee will vote on it. We anticipate it to pass because the House and Senate Agriculture Committee leadership has already addressed it in-depth.
2. Once approved by the Conference Committee, the House and Senate will vote on the bill.
3. Then, the bill passes on to the executive branch to be signed into law.
