Qld Govt announces submission period for steel project EIS The proposed $4 billion Gladstone Steel Plant Project has taken another major step forward with the project’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) now formally accepted for review by the Queensland office of the Coordinator General. Project proponent Boulder Steel Ltd was today officially advised by Coordinator General Barry Broe that the EIS would be available for public and agency comment for the period Saturday 12 January to Monday 25th February 2013. “This is a significant milestone for the GSPP and I would like to thank our team, CQ Consulting Group and all other specialist advisors involved in the preparation of the EIS,” said Mr. David Simpson, Boulder Steel Managing Director. “We welcome all to view the EIS throughout the submission and public consultation period, and provide feedback if needed to enable our team to proceed to construction with the best outcomes for the Gladstone region. Our team is now critically focused on securing joint venture partnerships to enable the project to reach financial close,” Mr. Simpson said. Boulder Steel is proposing to construct and operate an integrated steel making plant on a 600 hectare site within the Gladstone State Development Area (GSDA) about 25 km north-west of Gladstone’s CBD. The plant would produce 5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of high quality steel in slab form for export to overseas markets. It would employ up to 2000 people during a two-year construction period and create up to 1800 permanent positions in operations. The GSPP EIS consultation period will be publicly advertised prior to and throughout the six week submission period.
