The field has some 37 old mines that have produced gold with grades from 1oz to 5oz per tonne from each mine, processed at the adjoining Battery paid for by the State Government and the Battery still stands today as a tourist attraction. Production was interrupted with the 2nd world war, when the water level stopped mining, when the ability to physically go deeper was restricted and when the grades of gold dropped too low for the battery processing costs ................ said to be from 18 g/t to 25 g/t ? Incidentally one of the Government geologists of the day an E ce Clark stated that the Geology of the Paynes Find was similar to the Westonia "Edna May"Mine. The remnants of the underground mine of Edna May was sold in October 2017 to Ramelius for A$90m and has subsequently announced terrific high grade results on increased drilling.
