Mullock disposal was always an issue at Morning Star unlike the workings further up the hill where there was more space available to place the waste.
The old guys were expert at sorting and stacking in worked out stopes. Don’t be mislead as to how much waste you have seen in the upper voids (down to 9 level). There are a further 16 levels and as the mine workings deepened so did the importance of keeping waste underground both from the point of view of conserving space on the surface and minimising trucking. There is an underlay shaft from 19 level which involved multiple handling so retention of waste underground was even more important.
Recoveries were probably as good then as what can be expected from the Gekko mill.
Probably no more gold was taken by the miners in the old days than what is now.
Tonnage was measured by truck loads as it is now although augmented by scales on the mill feed conveyor.
