    It is often called an iron oxide gossan.

    Finding a surface gossan just like the one in the picture i posted was a popular way for explorers to identify mineralisation below. They were exploited for that reason and so there are probably not that many left to find. Ross's Reef is one though and is underexplored!

    Horseshoe Lights vms was discovered that way by a couple of individuals back in about 1946, but they were looking for gold. They missed the copper!!

    There was a gossan at Red Bore (THX).

    Erosion takes its toll over hundreds of millions of years, and to the extent in some cases that the clear evidence of the gossan has gone. Your mention of a gossan might not be erroneous therefore, as I would expect one to have been around Wodger, one at Forrest too. Whilst the surface expression may have long gone, the mineralisation would still be below, or at least that part that has not disappeared over time. My guess is that this is a gossanous area.

    Wiki: Gossan (eiserner hut or eisenhut) is intensely oxidized, weathered or decomposed rock, usually the upper and exposed part of an ore deposit or mineral vein.
