Regal Funds emerges in takeover target Stanmore Coal
By Sarah Thompson and Anthony MacdonaldUpdated 21 Nov 2018 — 5:00 PM, first published at 3:46 PM
Australian hedge fund Regal could be the kingmaker in the battle for control of Stanmore Coal, after it popped up as a substantial shareholder in the takeover target on Wednesday.
Stanmore is mulling a lowball bid from Indonesia's Golden Energy and Resources, which has valued the miner at $239 million with its 95 cent per share offer.
It's almost a year since Street Talk revealed Regal had snapped up former Glencore dealmaker Tim Elliott, who was front and centre in a string of Glencore's coal acquisitions including Clermont, Integra and the carve-up of Rio Tinto's Hunter Valley assets with Yancoal.
If a rival bid were to emerge for Stanmore, which is being advised by Citi, it could well come from coal king Hans Mende, whose company Fitzroy Australia Resources bought the nearby Carborough Downs mine off Vale in late 2016. Glenn Hunt
Anyone who watched the role that L1 Capital played in Eramet's takeover of MDL earlier this year might have an inkling of what Regal are doing here.

the fact Golden Energy's bid remains well below the $1.20 target price Bell Potter have on Stanmore shares, and the rather more ambitious $1.50 target price floated by Petra Capital, means the deal is unlikely to get done at this level.
"We'd been buying Stanmore because it's deeply undervalued," Regal's Tim Elliott told Street Talk. "The almost nil premium offer does not come close to recognising the strong near term cash generation or longer term value of Stanmore."
"We're supportive of management continuing to deliver on their growth strategy."
