So he may not have expected to convert them, or he got an offer from elsewhere that more than made up for it. That assumes it wasn't genuinely for personal reasons of a non business type. He seemed to be leaving in a hurry, as usually notice is given, handover etc etc. As he left at the release of the results, it seems that it was planned to me., as he had to give 3m notice unless otherwise agreed.
