Show me one decent geologist that would stop a hole in the target rocks with the target mineralisation based on nothing more than a "gut feeling" that there's no point continuing and a vague wish to save money by not going the planned and budgeted distance to target depth.

That geologist would NEVER make a discovery. Ever.

They'd certainly have a hide to then turn around and ask for a salary twice the best market rate if saving shareholder money was so important to them.
