Cheering for the rank outsider to make a killing. And you don't shoot the nag just because it did win (or place or show) you talk about how good a race it ran and how the track was the best and the jockey got unlucky and every other conceivable excuse other than it was never expected to win (that's why the long odds). Go you good thing is the expression you see quite often.
