As someone who deals with architecture on a daily basis, I can say that solar panels on homes are horrible aesthetically which is why I've never liked them.

But the main factor is they are quite useless to countries with very high density living, due to minimal surface area to occupant ratio, and that also applies to places like seaside resorts.

Wind power is too conditional, and has had questionable success to date.

I feel that Protean / Wave energy provides a good alternative solution to always-on power supplementation and diesel replacement. I don't think the need for sustainable will diminish at all. The extraction of hydrocarbons is just such an environmentally impactful process, and in my opinion unsustainable.
