Tragic news for the family of the patient. I will not hide the fact the announcement caused a tear to well up in my eyes. I truely feel for those directly connected to the patient involved.
The belief/hope (mine) that PTXs current trials would provide a silver bullet to all was given a reality check. But that does not exclude the very real possibility that it will provide a silver bullet to some.
I must say the the terms "SAE" and "patient [x]" have such a clinical and non emotional note.
We are of course dealing with people, human beings, and in the present trials people who have been selected to participate in part because they have an extremely poor prognosis under currently available treatments.
The clinical trials have as understand the announcements to date shown little or no toxicity on all other participants or "patients" to use the clinical terminology.
By contrast the Patient in question appears to have had a number of particular, (possibly related) complications.
One gets the impression from the very fair assessment contained in todays announcement coupled with the earlier breast cancer announcement that it is more likely than not that her passing was not a consequence of exposure to the programme but rather that she did not respond positively as others have because of her unique complications.
If so then it seams likely that this event will not negatively impact on the trials and the hope or expectation that the various PTX200 trials will continue and ultimately provide a treatment option for many other otherwise terminally ill patients or people.
