I was interested to read in today's AFR an article about copper & some forces acting positively on the price. One was the unfortunate land collapse at one of the largest mines in the world, RIO's Bingham Canyon in Utah where "it expects to lose 125,000 tonnes of copper from the collapse. About 100,000 tonnes of refined output could also be lost because of the accident."
The article also goes on to refer to Chile (where a third of the world's total copper comes from - so we're fishing in the right pond) and that labour unrest in a mine operated by Codelco (the worlds largest copper miner) has also constrained supply. If memory serves me from my economics classes a million years ago, that if demand exceeds supply then price will rise.
