we are kidding ourselves if we think our means to short is the same as banks, such as UBS. The saying about needing money to make money isn't just a throw away statement. It points towards the power such large entities have to make more money more quickly. For instance, the tax we pay on profits is almost always more as is the fees we pay to move shares in certain directions. If we consider these advantages alone- I'm certain there are more - this leverage allows them to create profit where we could not. The only rational conclusion is that shorting is not an open market. Although there is nothing illegal about it, there is certainly something wrong with it - it is inequitable and should illegal.
