I find these projects which are centralised power generating behemoths with the transmission costs inherent to be the same as what we already have with coal fired power stations without the pollution.
With losses of 9% in transmission straight out, why bother to get it all the way to Indonesia or for that matter anywhere over a couple of hundred kilometres away. Look at the size of WA compared to the project.
Transmission lines still need to be built at huge expense and maintained just in WA alone.
Hundreds of microgrids owned by anyone who wants buy one could be built and you own it onsite with zero transmisssiin costs in any year let alone 20 years down the track.
If power is transmitted to Indonesia it still hits land at one central point somewhere and is then distributed out on another line to an island or 200 islands....crazy.
You can bypass the power generators and their ongoing costs and control your own power exactly were you want it generated with microgrids.
These projects are not feasible surely. I find it just a couple of big consortiums beating their chest and trying to stay in the game when de-centralised microgrids are the future.
Look at the uptake of hybrid solar systems waiting on battery costs to fall in the residential market that enables each household to have its own little microgrid that will generate power locally for 10 or 20 years.
