There are barristers and there are barristers. I reckon that many well-credentialled solicitors working in the commercial world would 'eat' some barristers working in the same field. Practice - v - theory!!
Anyway, what was this barrister's field of expertise? It could have been criminal law, or workers comp or personal injury or immigration or administrative law or environmental law or family law or mining contract law or............
