If you owned 5% of a company, and you could use your shareholdings to make a profit by making the market in that company, would you do it?

Financial services companies do... they're not just sit and wait investors, they have to maximise the value of their participation in institutional CRs. They manipulate short term price movements to offload at higher prices, making both the buy and sell depth, selling shares to themselves to churn volume and catch out punters hoping for a rising price, basically blatantly and legally manipulating the share price for profit.

If your average punter like you or I were to undertake the same practices, it would actually be a crime.
