Bosswhat...
I adopted a 'policy of counting to ten before replying to your post'. To be honest, I would love to engage in a 'compare and tell' dialogue or stand on the highest mountain and scream out loud to all and sundry those who would listen about our experience.
In my opinion, you were complimented by being told you did not fit their 'culture'...
You display a sound understanding of the industry and as you say, this is from many years of operating in a manner which brought about results. We were the same...very good results.
You are also correct on the other thread about high margins being the key...a no brainer really. Of course couple this with a finger on the pulse with financials and an ethical specialised service of the highest standard and the bottom line will look after itself. In my view, working with staff on the things that matter, the areas that bring results are where a manager reigns over growing profits. Profits do not grow in companies with too many chiefs and where there is too much emphasis on keeping everyone of them happy so their desks are tidy and their job is done. It can be forgotten by these companies that the job is 'recruitment'! Trust me, I know where you are coming from and the frustrations you felt.
Over the years I have watched in disbelief as announcements were made to the ASX with recruitment companies blaming a 'downturn in the industry' for poor results...to me this always seemed opportunist and an excuse for poor management practices.
The strategy of acquire, acquire, acquire with more and more debt is a dangerous one, in my view. Different business but ABC comes to mind.
You left before us and the connection is a close one. I use 'us' because it is not I that would have met you directly but my other half. Make no mistake I lived the business on a daily basis. The triumphs and successes were shared as were the disappointments. My other half is and always has been someone of the highest integrity, honesty, caring and kindness.
The other half is retired now, earlier than desired, is as bored as hell but is getting involved in a charity project which he hopes will fill the void. I myself spend my time on the markets in an attempt to regain that pot of gold that alluded us!! It was good whilst it lasted, we've still done well, it's just that the story did not have a fairytale ending. There was a fork in the road and we chose the wrong one. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!
Feel free to give a couple more clues as we are still trying to specifically place you and/or your new business, we have an idea, but not 100% certain. Aaarrhh...I find it so cathartic having this 'non-conversation'. The names you mention, Skilled, all have figured large in our world as have a few others in a big way.
For now....
Have a good day.
Cheers...
