API had their issues back a few years ago including the mystery of an odd $20m that disappeared into thin air! They were over $2 at one stage but crashed under the effects of the governments generics pricing policy, the entrance of DHL and some problems with manufacturing of own label products.
The success of the expansion of Priceline Pharmacy has had a lot to do with API's share price rebound. At one stage back a few years ago Sigma had a market cap almost twice that of API and now it is the reverse. Given the current pharmacy scene and market share between wholesalers I would suggest that the eventual market equilibrium (post Chemist Warehouse switch ) will eventually see EBOS/Symbion leading the way with API and Sigma fighting out for 2nd place with eventually similar market capitalisations.
With the latest CSO decision it will be interesting to see what DHL's strategy will now be. It pulls the rug under their feet a bit and may mean that they choose to get out or decide to become a full line CSO wholesaler. How would a global powerhouse like DHL do that? One guess.
