I had the opportunity to travel to Keng Tung which is in the middle of Shan state whereas Lashio is the north. I took flew from Bangkok to Chiang Rai and crossed the border via Tachilek and then went by taxi till i reached Keng Tung.
I had someone to take me. If you went by yourself it will be super hard. You definitely need a local. Put it this way you have to pre-book your accommodation, cross multiple check points, report to every town immigration and regular police checks. The military there runs the show. You can see many fancy buildings built for military "hotel" which is pretty much the government. I saw some tanks being transported there.
The roads are horrendous and narrow most of the time. Because the area is in the hill region, they bend a lot and accidents happen often, not to mention the abundant wildlife straying onto the roads. Power supply is unreliable and the place where i stayed in relied on hydro which only worked 30% of the time. Because it is in the hill region, hydro is the way to go for cheap power so MYL must be sourcing their power from one. Water was fresh spring water from the mountain which they had plenty of. I was allowed to go into the mini hydro set up while i was there and even have a video of it. Old chinese tech with some modern upgrades.
The locals are quite friendly. The Shan people are different from the Burmese (Most of the police and military are Burmese). Some places within the Shan state are off limits to even the Burmese police. I was told this was due to Shan drug warlords running the show.
From what i asked last time, quite a lot of people in Lashio have Chinese blood and many can speak Chinese.
The terrain and lack of infrastructure is definitely a factor but the good thing is they are close to China.
Anyway good luck. If you want more info you can ask me. I will ask my friend who has family down there.

Hi Random,
Thanks for the offer. Yes MYL have a good Hydro setup but will also be utilising some diesel generation.
Looking forward to movement of all sorts including the ability to venture on site later in the year.
Remarkable ore body that just might keep on giving and giving is the biggest draw card.
